1. View it as an opportunity. With ever-hectic schedules, adding another to-do item to your week may seem overwhelming – but actively discussing your child’s progress with their teacher is one of the most important opportunities you have to help them thrive. Keep the lines of communication open and team up with your child’s teacher to lay the groundwork for successful learning and development this school year.

2. Ask questions. Don’t just listen to what your child’s teacher has to say – engage in conversation with them! It may help to prepare a list of open-ended questions beforehand, such as:

·      Is my child struggling with anything?

·      How can I help?

·      In what type of situation or environment does my child seem to perform best?

The worst outcome of a parent teacher conference would be to miss an opportunity to learn how you can support your child, especially if he or she is struggling in school. Asking questions and being involved can help keep things on track.

3. Involve your child. Rules on bringing your kids to parent teacher conferences vary among schools, but it’s worth checking – your kids may be interested in hearing what their teachers have to say. If attending isn’t possible, ask your children beforehand if they have any questions or concerns they’d like you to address. This gives them an opportunity to be involved and strengthens your connection.

When it comes down to it, teachers do a lot to prepare for parent teacher conferences. Don’t just go to listen – be engaged and make the most out of this amazing opportunity to help your kids learn and grow!
