With cooler temperatures outside and extended holiday breaks on the horizon, indoor activities such as arts and crafts are a great way to beat boredom, get your kids into the holiday spirit and create lasting memories. Here are a few simple tips to ensure that your next crafting session is stress-free and fun for all:
1. Keep age and ability in mind. The younger your kids are, the simpler the projects should be. Likewise, older kids and preteens may not feel challenged or excited by something easy, so look for age-appropriate activities. If you have kids across the age spectrum, keep supplies on hand for a variety of different projects.
2. Manage your expectations and focus on the fun.
Avoid having expectations of what the finished product
should
look like – let your children use their imaginations and give them the freedom to create whatever comes to mind. Some kids may want everything to turn out “perfect” – reassure them that it’s the effort that counts and that every project is special in its own way.
3. Keep supplies on hand. If you or your kids have a specific craft in mind, make a list and go get the supplies from your local craft store. If not, get out the supplies you have on hand – paper, scissors, crayons, glitter – and encourage them to create their own original craft.
4. Ask for their input. Think you found the perfect Pinterest craft? Before you start buying supplies, make sure your kids are on board. Better yet, give them a few different options to pick from and ask which one looks like the most fun. If you have more than one child, be prepared for disagreements. Offer compromises or have several projects going at once! Kids like to be involved in decision-making, and letting them choose the craft helps keep them interested in finishing it.
5. Get involved. Crafts and projects present a fun bonding and learning experience for you and your children. Document the activity by taking pictures and even try your own hand at crafting – let yourself be a kid with your kids! And don’t try to adhere to any agenda or schedule – the best crafting sessions happen when creativity is allowed to flow freely.
By following these tips, you and your children are well on your way to a successful crafting session this winter. Need inspiration on which projects to tackle?
