All kids have a strong need and desire to feel loved. The tricky part is, just like adults, every child interprets love differently. Figuring out ways to show love to your kids is an important key in maintaining a strong parent-child relationship. And the more connected you and your children are, the easier it is to have meaningful conversations and reinforce your support.
Consider these tips to help determine the best ways to ensure that your children feel loved:
1. Determine their love language.
For some kids, it’s spending time with them. For others, it’s doing something kind for them or sharing words of encouragement or physical affection. It could be one, it could be a mix, or it could be all.
2. Give them a sense of belonging.
Acknowledge your children’s importance to the family unit. For example, during family meetings, make it a point to make them feel included. Recognize their accomplishments and positive contributions.
3. Make sure they feel valued.
Show your appreciation for your kids’ individuality – let them know you value all that they are. With teens, think of atypical ways such as putting notes on their bedroom door or special messages on their favorite desserts to show them that they’re valued.
4. Let them share their opinions.
When kids are given the opportunity to voice their opinions with you, it’s empowering. Giving them a forum to share shows that you value their thoughts. As noted in the previous blog, open your heart and mind, and simply listen.
