Kids, jobs, chores, relationships, extra-curricular activities and hobbies – as parents, we have a lot to juggle. With so much to do, make sure you’re not putting your own needs on the backburner. Taking care of yourself – finding physical, mental and emotional balance – enables you to be the best parent, spouse, friend and co-worker you can be.
How do you determine if you’re in balance or not? Take a self-assessment: list 4 or 5 areas of your life that are important to you, like family, work and health. Then, on a scale of 1 to 10, rate where you think you are – 1 being dissatisfied or stressed, 10 being fully satisfied. When you’re done, look at where you netted out and identify areas you need to work on.
Carving out even a few minutes of your day can help restore a feeling of balance. Here are a few ideas to help boost your physical, mental and emotional well-being:
Physical:
· Take a nice hot bath, accompanied by a good book or some music.
· Exercise by doing something you love – whether that’s hiking, doing yoga or going to the gym.
· Take a nap! Even 20 minutes of quiet, alone time can help you recharge and tackle the rest of your day.
Mental:
· Read a book about something you’ve been interested in, even if it isn’t directly related to your job or home life.
· Practice meditation to help put your mind at ease.
· Track your time for a few days to get an idea of how you’re currently spending your time – this will give you an idea of how and where to make changes to feel more balanced.
Emotional:
· Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, and ask if there’s anything you can do to help them out or be more present in their life.
· Take time out of every day to do something that you like or that makes you feel good.
